Market Capitalization
The total value of a company's shares in the stock market.
Simple explanation
It is calculated as: Current Share Price × Total Number of Shares.
Large Cap: Very big, stable companies (Top 100).
Mid Cap: Medium size, higher growth potential (Next 150).
Small Cap: Smaller companies, higher risk, highest growth potential.
SEBI officially defines market-cap categories for the Indian market. The top 100 companies by market cap on NSE are 'Large Cap' (think Reliance, TCS, HDFC Bank, Infosys). Companies ranked 101-250 are 'Mid Cap' (like Voltas, Persistent Systems). Everything below rank 250 is 'Small Cap'.
Market cap changes every day as the share price moves. A stock can get 're-classified' from mid-cap to large-cap if its price rises enough. AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India) publishes the official list every six months, and mutual funds must realign their portfolios accordingly.
For Indian retail investors, market cap matters because it directly affects volatility, liquidity, and risk. Large-cap stocks on BSE and NSE trade in very high volumes, you can buy or sell lakhs of rupees worth instantly. Small-cap stocks may have low trading volumes, meaning you might struggle to exit a large position without moving the price against you.
A balanced Indian portfolio typically holds 50-60% in large-caps for stability, 20-30% in mid-caps for growth, and 10-20% in small-caps for high-growth potential. This is similar to how Nifty indices are structured. Nifty 50 (large-cap), Nifty Midcap 150, and Nifty Smallcap 250.
Real-world example
Reliance Industries has a market cap of over ₹18 Lakh Crore with about 675 crore shares outstanding on BSE/NSE. Meanwhile, a company listed on the NSE SME platform might have a market cap of just ₹50 Crore. If you invest ₹1 Lakh in Reliance, you own a tiny fraction that you can sell anytime due to high liquidity. If you invest ₹1 Lakh in a ₹50 Crore small-cap, you own a meaningful percentage but may find it hard to sell quickly. SEBI's classification helps mutual funds and investors categorize their exposure across these segments.
